   Instructions


  1. 1.Decide on a class to consider.

  2. 2.Download the spreadsheet. Mind Muse Thinking Skills Stocktake.xls

  3. 3.In the “Rating” column, provide a score between 0-4 to judge the average competency for the stated skill in a given class.

  4. 4.In the “Value” column, provide a value between 0-4 to indicate the importance of the skill for the stated skill for your given class.

  5. 5.When complete, look at the interpretation of your score below to see where your students excel or require improvement.

How do your students’ thinking skills measure up?

20 or less

This is a dream class – good questioning, understanding, reflection, analysis and evaluation. Looks like these skills are all well established. Brilliant! Keep doing what you’re doing.


21- 40

You are satisfied with the level of your students' development in this area, so while you can work on extending and improving these skill sets, they are not a priority for this class.


41- 60

Your students' skills in this area need improvement. It is also an area you judge to be valuable in their learning. Try integrating a few exercises in their classes so that they get more practice and greater understanding.

61+

This is an area to focus some attention. Your students' abilities in relation to the value of the skill illustrate a significant gap in their learning. Commit yourself to integrate a range of exercises to build these skills for this group of students. They will love you for it!

1 = minor value for this skill

0 = no value for this class

Rating

average skill level for class


4 = the lack of this skill gives me headaches

3 = there is a serious lack of skill

2 = some work needs to be done in this area

1 = skill level requires minor tuning

0 = no problem at all
